在中国，3G代表的不是一个新的无线通信时代，而是过渡时期。包括运营商，包括用户，都在3G牌照发放之后，集体观望。这一结果，是只有形的手来巨细无遗地安排——一场市场竞争所形成的怪胎。
中移动被国家寄以重望，希望这家最大的运营商能够将自有标准TD-SCDMA发扬光大，但事实上TD这个标准让中移动进退维谷。应该说，如果没有竞争的话，单一一个运营商推TD是没有问题的。但是，现在的3G格局是中移动左电信右联通。暂且不说3G，各家后面的GSM网络不能撤吧？既然GSM网络还在，有什么理由让用户去使用信号极差，终端垃圾的TD网络呢？如果只有一个运营商，那就好办了，比如，就把GSM网络全部升级或者说退化为TD好了，反正用户没有其他选择。
电信的天翼信号倒是超强，连很多以往中移动信号的盲区都覆盖到了，但是可选择的终端还是太少，这和移动的TD终端一样，都只是投入力度不足的原因，如果学一下联通，集采甚至定制一批手机，也花不了几个钱。三个运营商当中，联通拿到的WCDMA牌照倒是最成熟，市面上能够支持的终端也是最多的，而终端市场本来很成熟的联通，倒是第一个不惜代价投入巨资集采手机，据国内《第一财经日报》报道，联通一出手就是上百亿采购500万部IPHONE。但是从品牌，从服务能力，从渠道乃至内部管理体系的控制能力而言，联通能否吸引到用户，甚至连数量达500万部的IPHONE是否能够及时出手，业界都还抱着怀疑的态度。
面对到手的3G牌照，三个运营商各自端出的菜，都是鸡肋，这样的氛围中，用户除了不明真相地围观，还能干什么？
中国看似有三大移动运营商了，但竞争条件依然不够充分，最大的原因之一是无法携号转网。换个号码不难，难的是换号之后的联系人通知，这个成本很高，成功率也很低。对于大多数因为变换工作地点有过换号经验的人来说，基本上每换一次号码，都会丢失一批联系人。你看，我们不但没法在不同运营商之间携号转移，连同一个运营商网内，都无法做到携号跨区，漫游费用实在太黑了。在此条件下，中移动再怎么“昏招”百出，其先发优势牢不可破。
审时度势，电信和联通本来应该把精力放在新入网用户的群体上，而不是硬生生去抢中移动的存量用户，诱惑他们换号。但是，众所周知，不管是天翼的宣传攻势，还是五百万的IPHONE集采，都显示了他们抢夺的群体，依然是成熟的已有手机用户，而不是初次使用者。也许，是因为大家平时惯于暴利，看不上新入网用户那么低的ARPU值（每个用户平均收入）。但是这种漠视长期战略的短期营销，注定了电信、联通是无所作为的。
缺乏足够的产品或者服务亮点，就难以撼动中移动的存量用户，而泛滥的山寨机，也在帮助着中移动轻松地发展自己的新入网用户。在这么一种局势之下，中移动有什么动力和压力去推动一个未知的TD网络呢？明星产品的概念再好，也不能自我阉割现在的金牛业务啊，再说这个所谓明星的概念，也仅仅一般而已。何况，在数据增值业务方面，中移动正在收缩战线，对于3G所能带来的理论带宽，看不出有太多的兴趣。按照中移动的理解，“移动”互联网只有飞信、139社区和邮箱，那么别说3G，连2.5G的通道，都已经宽敞得看不到人了。比特们隔几十米外遥相问好，面目模糊。
等到电信、联通明白了“莫欺少年穷”的道理，悟到了新用户的ARPU值也是会提升的，从而进入长期战略发展阶段，放低身段，努力忽悠第一次买手机的人，然后细分品牌，安心培育属于自己的用户群，并趁中移动在数据增值业务上的持续迷茫和自恋时杀入，以当年成功建设起中国互联网的放养方式建设起中国的无线互联网时，大概也已经到了该是3G谢幕的时候了。那个时候，才真正揭幕无线宽带服务的竞争。
这是一个多么冗长的前提，冗长得TD还没有来得及长大，移动已经为之准备好了葬礼。
把TD授权给缺乏压力和动力的中移动时，TD就已经被自杀，以此为标志，中国的3G就只是一个围观和被围观的故事。
现在，中移动在宣誓中不停地设计战略，中电信在呐喊中频繁内部调整，中联通在下注中定位飘忽。至于手机厂商，渠道商以及用户，基本都苦着脸端坐在沙发上。所以，要说3G在中国到底忽悠了谁，还真不是一个容易回答的话题。也许，被忽悠的，反而是那些发放牌照的部门。
江湖上有一个传说，他们总是在下着一盘很大很大的棋，下着下着，棋手自己就变成了棋子。这样的思路无疑很傻很天真，3G用户量虽然一直只听到口号，没看到实际增长的，但没有人怀疑3G将带动或者说已经带动了上万亿的经济总量。至于这上万亿的经济总量，和需要用到手机的用户有多少关系，那已经无法深究。
